Ross Island at Andaman Islands

– The Ghostly Beauty of Andamans Frozen in Time

Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Port Blair lies Ross Island – a place where time has paused, and nature now claims what history once built. Though small in size, Ross Island packs a powerful mix of eerie colonial ruins, whispering coconut palms, and wild deer roaming freely. Once the British administrative headquarters of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, this tiny island has transformed into a scenic heritage escape that blends abandoned architecture with raw tropical charm.

Geographically, Ross Island is part of the South Andaman district and belongs to the vast Andaman Archipelago. Its close proximity to Port Blair makes it a perfect half-day trip for history lovers and photographers. Despite its modest size, the island is rich in natural beauty—fringed with clear blue waters, shaded walkways, and thick groves where spotted deer and peacocks roam untamed. With no vehicles allowed, it feels like a living museum surrounded by tropical wilderness, where every corner tells a story from a different era.

Ross Island, now officially called Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, served as the capital during British rule until an earthquake in 1941 and later a Japanese invasion led to its abandonment. What remains today are ivy-covered ruins of a church, a bakery, and officer quarters that are slowly being taken over by roots and vines. The air is still, the silence only interrupted by waves and bird calls—making it a surreal blend of history and nature. Whether you're a solo explorer, a history buff, or just looking to escape the city buzz of Port Blair, Ross Island is a must-visit chapter of the Andaman story that stays with you long after the trip ends.
