Baratang Island in Andaman Islands

Baratang island is located between Middle and South Andaman Islands. Approximately, 110 Kms from Port Blair. Baratang has plenty of private accommodations. Forest and PWD guest houses are also available. Visitors should book well in advance for a confirmed reservation. The major attractions are the limestone caves, the Mud volcano, Parrot Island, and Baludera Beach.

Baratang Island is an island of the Andaman Islands. It belongs to the North and Middle Andaman administrative district, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island lies 150 km north of Port Blair.

Baratang Island offer Dense Forest, Tribes, Mangroves, boats, beaches, birds, caves, trekking, volcanoes. Journey to this Island is an adventurous one. The journey to the cave is a lifetime experience for some. The cave contains beautiful cave formation. Limestone is mostly made up of the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate). Limestone is very soluble, meaning it is easily dissolved. Rain water picks up carbon dioxide in the air and a weak solution of carbonic acid is formed. The convoy accompanied by the forest officials and rangers leave around 3 am or 4 am and return by 6 pm, that is the only time when it is possible to reach the Baratang Island.

It takes 3 to 3.5 hours to cover this distance each way. So one can assume the total travel duration can be about 6 hours.

  • Start your journey back to Port Blair, as the convoy gates remain open only until 2:30 p.m. If you plan to spend some more time at Baratang Island, it is best to reach the island by night as this will save you from the early morning hassle and you will be able to visit the Parrot Island as well.

How to reach

Once at Port Blair, tourists need to use local bus transport or taxis to reach the closest jetty, Nilambur Jetty. From Nilambur Jetty, tourists can board a local ferry that will take them to Baratang Island. The ferry ride is relatively shorter than the bus ride, extending to approximately 15 minutes.
