Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Andaman Islands
– A Sanctuary of Coral Reefs and Clear Waters
Spread across 281 square kilometers of pristine seascape near Wandoor, the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is one of the most captivating natural reserves in the Andaman Islands. Established in 1983 to protect the rich marine biodiversity and fragile coral ecosystems, this national park comprises 15 islands, each surrounded by turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and thriving marine life. Managed by the Forest Department, it serves as a living classroom for those interested in ecology, underwater life, and responsible tourism.
The park is especially known for its coral diversity and the crystal-clear shallows that are perfect for snorkeling, glass-bottom boat rides, and scuba diving. Popular islands within the park include Jolly Buoy and Red Skin, which open seasonally to tourists on a rotational basis to ensure reef protection. Both offer stunning views of coral gardens and are strictly plastic-free zones. The Marine Interpretation Centre at Wandoor, located at the park’s entrance, provides an excellent introduction to the ecosystem through models, photographs, and interactive displays.
Ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and families, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park offers more than a beach day it’s a curated experience into underwater conservation. Entry is regulated, and advance permits are required to visit the park’s islands.
